Welcome to the week 1 of the Yard Transformation Challenge

As we have announced last week, we are planning a vegetable backyard garden makeover now as part of the Yard Transformation Challenge Spring 2018. If you missed the post, you can check it out here.

We are so excited to have a few other bloggers joining us on this adventure! You can find there Week 1 updates here. I can’t wait to see their garden transformations!

Vegetable Backyard Garden Planning

This week has been all about checking places for the construction materials and well, getting more plants 🙂

We were so excited to find a few tree peonies plants at the Van Dusen Gardens’ annual plant sale we attended last weekend!

If you don’t know, both my hubby and I love peonies! We have been slowly expanding our small collection over the last two years living in our new old house. But I didn’t want to miss an opportunity to add a few more unique ones to our collection.

We got a few other perennial plants there: a beautiful Crimson Pirate daylily, David phlox, Chocolate Lily and a pretty hellebore.

By the way, did you know that the Chocolate Lily bulbs are edible? I didn’t.

We also got a New Dawn climbing rose for an arbor.

Add an Arbor

My husband and I don’t have a consensus on this one. I want to build an arbor similar to this one. Whereas, he wants to buy an iron arbor similar to this.

My arguments for building one are a simple design, and flexibility in size. His arguments for getting a pre-made iron arbor are that it is less time-consuming to simply install it rather than build it and the price.

One thing we both agree on is that it has to be sturdy enough to hold a climbing rose and withstand the winds that we get here…

We will be going back to a store later this week, and see what the difference in price will be for either of them… Because he will be the one making and installing it, I will need to let him have a final say on this one…

Build the Raised Beds

This is going to be a big project as well. Two of the raised beds will be similar to the ones we have there already: 3’x6′ (approximately 1m x 2m).

However, one of the beds is going to be a long one and it will take a couple of weekends to build it.

Remember to come back and check on our progress with them 🙂

Also, remember to check the other participants’ updates for the week here.
